Make Dog Walking Arthritis-Friendly

Heel, Rover! Dog leashes, leads and collars that keep your dog from walking you.

Q. Walking my dog has helped me get into an exercise routine, but he pulls like a truck. How to I curb his pulling?

A. It’s a common question and challenge for anyone with a pup. But it can prove especially painful for furry friend owners with arthritis. Working with a dog trainer is a great first step to make walking your pooch a pleasure rather than a pain. But there are also many no-pull dog collars, harnesses and leashes available that can keep your four-legged friend from taking you for a walk. Available at pet product retailers, here are a handful of options that can help.

Collars

The Gentle Leader Headcollar ($20) wraps around your dog’s neck and muzzle and works like a halter on a horse. The PetSafe Gentle Leader ($20) and Snoot Loop Head Collar ($30) are other similar options.

Harnesses

The Halti Dog Harness (starting at $18) works in conjunction with your dog’s regular collar and enables you to steer Rover form the chest, which is a more efficient point of control, according to the manufacturer. Other similar options include the Freedom No-Pull Harness (starting at $30) or the PetSafe Easy Walk Harness, No Pull Dog Harness ($23).

Leashes

To walk your pup hands-free, try a waist leash like the Buddy System Hands Free Leash System (starting at $23). The system includes a collar you wear around your waist that connects to an included dog leash. Another option is the Kurgo Quantum 6-in-1 Dog Leash ($30), which can be worn around your waist, over your head and shoulder (like a purse or messenger bag), serve as a stationary tether without unhitching your dog or used as a traditional 3-foot, 6-foot or two-dog leash.
