Juvenile Arthritis Corner

Saturday, October 4, 2008 -- 504 Workshop for Parents of Children with Arthritis

"Some days your child may breeze into school, without joint pain or mobility issues breaking her stride. On others, she may struggle with the front steps, leaning heavily on the railing. Such is the unpredictable cycle of arthritis.

Some aspects of school that most children take for granted can erode your child's energy and joints: hard plastic chairs, writing exams, long stretches sitting cross-legged on the floor. Modifications can be surprisingly low-key, yet provide significant relief. For example, to help your child flex stiffened joints, the teacher can request that she distribute papers or walk a note down to the front office.

Sometimes you can handle any concerns you might have informally by chatting with your child's teacher or principal. But don't dismiss setting up more formal and legally binding paperwork, such as a 504 Plan or an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). These plans are based on laws set up to protect a student's rights to certain accommodations at school.

If your child does qualify for a 504 Plan, the plan that's drawn up should address obstacles specific to your child's symptoms. The plan, once developed, is a legally binding document that your child's teachers and other school staff must follow."

Excerpt from the book, Raising a Child with Arthritis (available through your local Arthritis Foundation Chapter Office).

Understanding that most students with arthritis qualify for services, plan to attend the October 4, 2008 Section 504 Workshop offered to parents of children with arthritis. Rosemary Blanchard, J.D.,Ph.D., Associate Professor of Education, Department of Educational Leadership & Policy Studies at California State University Sacramento will conduct the 504 Workshop which will equip parents to advocate on behalf of their child. For more information, please call 800.571.3456.

Note: Possible Reno area workshop: based on the level of interest, a Section 504 Workshop may be offered in the Reno area. Interested parents are encouraged to contact the chapter office to be placed on an interest list.
